Gram Panchayat Keylong impose a blanket ban on Beer during marriages

Gram Panchayat Keylong under the Lahaul subdivision of Lahaul Spiti district imposed a blanket ban on the use of Beer during Marriage and violators are to be slapped with fines of up to Rs 5000. 

According to a resolution passed by the Gram Sabha of Gram Panchayat Keylong stated that it has decided in the meeting held on July 2, 2023 that during marriage Beer would be completely banned. If anyone would be found violating this order of Gram Sabha the penalty of Rs 5000 is to be recovered by the Panchayat. The decision was taken during the meeting after information on the supply of inferior-quality Beer. A similar decision was also taken by the same Gram Sabha last year.

During the meeting, two other resolutions were also passed under which the Gram Panchayat amended the local customary rule fixing the number of rituals including Rs 200 of Dagnag,

Rs 1000 Jara and Rs 1500 of Dohaid. In another resolution, it was also decided mutually that in case of expressing condolence on the death of any person gram panchayat residents should visit such greaved family till the last date, and if any person could not visit till the last day of expressing condolence they could visit Gipuch Jurg ( on 49 day). After that, no family members would attend the condolence in the village.     

Villagers of Tribal districts make their own bylaws on the basis of their customary law practices in the Lahaul Spiti, Kinnuar, Panti, and Bharmour subdivisions of Chamba district.
