A lone donar could bring light in the life of four blinds as Himachal Pradesh also launched this facility in premier Health Institution Indra Gandhi Medical College  and hospital Shimla.
This was disclosed by IGMC Professor and Head, Ophthalmology Department  here today in a webinar.
This webinar was organised by four visually impaired girl and PhD scholarson the theme of “Right to Donate Eyes.
He said that one dead donor would be able to give sight to four corneal blind persons instead of two of earlier
He informed that upgrading the transplant techniques IGMC Eye Bank started spliting of donar cornea and it could able to perform transplantation surgery soon by using this most advanced techniques.
The equipment worth nearly Rs. 40 Lakh are being procured for the purpose.
He said in the past 10 years, as many as 276 blind persons have been given sight through transplant of cornea, 180 are in the waiting list and 1163 persons have filled up pledge forms to donate eyes after death.

He also stressed the need to create mass movement for encouraging eye donation among people as out of 1.20 crore visually impaired persons in the country, 20 Lakh are corneal blind whose sight could be restored by corneal transplant.
But only 40 to 50 thousand corneas are available every year and target is to procure atleast one Lakh cornea.
