Himachal for effective management of plastic waste to ensure EPR
The Himachal Pradesh Government decided to ensure extended producers’ responsibility (EPR) for the effective management of plastic waste in the state.
This decision was taken during a meeting presided by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu with the official state pollution control board.
The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) mechanism was discussed and it emerged that all Plastic Waste Producers should have an active role in the effective management of plastic waste.
To implement the decision there is a need to register plastic producers in all the Districts, The Chief Minister has directed districts, and civic and pollution control board officials to ensure effective plastic waste management, and all brand owners and producers of plastic material in the State should be registered.
The meeting was attended by the representatives of Action Alliance for Recycling Beverage Carton (AARC) dealing with waste Beverage cartoons, the PET Packaging Association for Clean Environment (PACE) dealing with PET bottles, and waste efficient collection and recycling efforts.
D.C Rana, Director, Department of Environment, Science Technology & Climate Change, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh informed that so far 30 brand owners & producers have been registered in the State, and yet too many are to be registered. During the
meeting different action points were discussed with representatives of AARC, WE Care, and PACE.
He said that there is a need to create awareness amongst Producer, Importer, and Brand Owner to register under the centralized portal developed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and with the Central Pollution Control Board.
In the State, the Regional Officer of HP State Pollution Control Board shall verify the information of Plastic Waste credits with respect to plastic waste generated by the Producer, Importer and Brand Owner in Himachal Pradesh on an actual basis.
