CPS emphasizes adequate breastfeeding facilities at the workplace

While emphasizing the role of breastfeeding in improving nutrition and enhancing early childhood development, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Sanjay Awasthi said that the occasion of ‘World Breastfeeding Week’, being celebrated from 1st to 7th August, aims to inform, anchor, engage and galvanize action on breastfeeding and related issues to promote breastfeeding.

The theme for the year 2023 is “Enabling Breastfeeding – Transforming for Working Parents. Sh. Awasthi said that workplace challenges remain the most common reason for women to never breastfeed or to stop breastfeeding earlier than recommended. Mothers need to give adequate time and support to breastfeed, he said.

Breastfeeding protects babies from common infectious diseases and boosts children’s immune systems, providing the key nutrients children need to grow and develop to their full potential. The purpose of breastfeeding week is to create awareness about breastfeeding practices and strengthen the health system he said.

A workplace needs adequate breastfeeding facilities to become a breastfeeding-friendly workplace to promote a conducive environment for breastfeeding mothers.

During the week, breastfeeding promotion activities will be carried out throughout the State to create awareness of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding besides, the pledge will be taken by all health workers to promote and support breastfeeding. Apart from this, breastfeeding can also reduce the mother’s risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure and has health benefits for the mother too.
