Solan Municipal Corporation gets new mayor, deputy mayor
The election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Solan Municipal Corporation was held here on Thursday.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Solan Ajay Yadav said that Usha Sharma, a Congress rebel of Ward No. 12 was declared elected in the election held for the post of Mayor in Municipal Corporation Solan. She got 11 votes while rival candidate Sardar Singh Thakur got 06 votes.
He said that Meera Anand of Ward No. 13 was declared elected in the election held for the post of Deputy Mayor in Municipal Corporation Solan. She got 12 votes and another candidate Sangeeta Thakur got 05 votes.
The authorized officer and Additional Deputy Commissioner Solan Ajay Yadav then administered the newly elected Mayor Usha Sharma and Deputy Mayor Meera Anand the oath of office and secrecy.
Notably, in today’s elections, the ruling Congress suffered a severe jolt after the BJP succeeded in capturing the post of deputy mayor owing to intense infighting in Congress. The party failed to keep its flock together despite repeated meetings of three cabinet ministers DR Shandil, Harshvardhan Chauhan, and Vikramaditya Singh with Congress councilors.
Emboldened by the victory of Meera Anand, the state BJP chief Dr. Rajeev Bindal, and hundreds of supporters took out a procession in the town to celebrate the victory. The Congress stalwarts further did not make a consensus on its candidate after Usha Sharma decided to contest the elections against DR Shandil’s staunch loyalist Sardar Singh.
