Snowfall Strands Hundreds Near Atal Tunnel, Massive Rescue Operation Underway

Heavy snowfall in the Atal Tunnel and Dhundhi region on Monday evening caused significant disruptions, leaving over 1,000 vehicles stranded. With roads covered in snow and vehicles slipping, the Manali Police launched an extensive rescue operation to ensure the safety of stranded tourists. Evacuations are being carried out in phases, directing tourists back toward Manali.

Snowfall Causes Chaos for Tourists

Snowfall began in the region on Monday afternoon and intensified by evening, leading to treacherous road conditions. Anticipating trouble, the police had earlier restricted vehicle movement beyond Solanganala. However, tourists returning from Lahaul were caught off guard as their vehicles began skidding on the snow near the South Portal of the Atal Tunnel and Dhundhi.

DSP Manali KD Sharma confirmed that rescue efforts are ongoing despite persistent snowfall. “Our team is working tirelessly to evacuate stranded tourists safely. Hundreds of vehicles have been guided towards Solanganala from the Dhundhi bridge, but many are still stuck between the South Portal and Dhundhi,” he said.

Police Assures Support Amid Adverse Weather

IPS Mayank Chaudhary reassured tourists of continued assistance, stating, “We are committed to making your experience in Lahaul Spiti safe and pleasant. If you need any help, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we are here to assist you.”

The slippery roads and fears of vehicle collisions have added to the challenges faced by rescue teams. Despite the ongoing snowfall, the operation is being conducted with utmost caution to prioritize the safety of everyone involved.

Advisory for Tourists and Locals

Tourists and locals have been strongly advised to avoid traveling to high-altitude areas during such adverse weather conditions. The Manali Police remain on high alert, with additional personnel deployed to manage the situation effectively.

This incident highlights the unpredictable nature of mountain weather and the importance of heeding advisories to ensure safety. As rescue efforts continue, tourists are urged to remain patient and cooperate with authorities to navigate this challenging situation safely.
