Rising Scrub Typhus death toll in Himachal: Two lives lost in IGMC, Shimla

In a heartbreaking development, two more patients—a 17-year-old from Mandi and a 25-year-old from Kullu—have succumbed to scrub typhus at Shimla’s Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC). The young patients had been battling the disease for several days, but their conditions worsened, leading to their tragic deaths on Tuesday. This brings the total number of scrub typhus fatalities at IGMC to four, including earlier victims—an elderly person from Mandi and a resident of Panthaghati, Shimla.

Dr. Rahul Rao, Senior Medical Superintendent at IGMC, confirmed the latest fatalities, underscoring the growing concern over the spread of scrub typhus in the region. With cases rising in Himachal Pradesh, especially in areas like Mandi, Kullu, and Shimla, medical experts are urging the public to stay alert, as early detection and timely treatment are critical in combating this disease.

Understanding Scrub Typhus

Scrub typhus is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, a bacterium transmitted through the bite of infected chiggers (larval mites). The disease is common in areas with dense vegetation, particularly rural regions where grass and weeds thrive.

Symptoms to Watch For

The early symptoms of scrub typhus can often mimic those of common viral infections, making diagnosis tricky without medical testing. However, doctors at IGMC have highlighted key warning signs:

  • High fever
  • Severe joint pain and body stiffness
  • General body aches
  • Neck infections
  • Swollen lymph nodes, particularly under the arms

Anyone experiencing these symptoms, especially after spending time in areas with dense vegetation, should seek immediate medical attention.

Preventing Scrub Typhus

While there is currently no vaccine for scrub typhus, taking precautionary measures can greatly reduce the risk of infection. Health professionals recommend the following:

  • Maintain Personal Hygiene: Regular bathing and washing of clothes help lower the risk of mite exposure.
  • Keep Surroundings Clean: Ensure that your environment is free from overgrown grass, weeds, and vegetation.
  • Use Insect Repellents: Applying insect repellents on exposed skin can offer protection from mite bites.
  • Proper Waste Disposal: Managing garbage and organic waste reduces potential breeding grounds for mites.

Doctors emphasize the importance of early detection, as untreated scrub typhus can lead to severe complications, including organ failure and even death. With the rising number of cases, the health department is urging people to prioritize cleanliness and be proactive in seeking medical care if symptoms arise.
