HPMC Lowers Prices for Universal Cartons for Apples in Himachal
HPMC, a government enterprise, has finalized the prices for universal cartons for the upcoming apple season, providing relief to millions of apple growers in the state. The prices for cartons have been set at 7.50 and 3.50 rupees lower than last year. Two types of cartons will be provided: brown universal cartons for 48 rupees and white ones for 56 rupees (plus GST). Last year, brown cartons were priced at 51.50 rupees and white ones at 63.50 rupees. Cartons will be available at HPMC branch offices starting next week.
On Monday, HPMC completed the tender process with several companies participating, including Shivalik Containers, Jasmer Makers, Radiance Pro, Mahavir Packaging, Sagar India, KSP Fibers, and Jaz Packers. After the technical screening, four companies were deemed eligible, with Shivalik Containers, Jaz Packers, and Jasmer Makers being shortlisted to supply the cartons. These companies have been instructed to provide the cartons within a week.
The President of the Progressive Growers Association suggested that the prices could have been set 4 to 5 rupees lower, noting that for several years, the corporation’s prices have been 2 to 10 rupees higher than market rates. The state produces approximately 20 to 30 million boxes of apples, while the agency provides only 1 to 1.5 million boxes. Higher rates from the agency also drive up market prices.
Growers will receive cartons priced between 48 and 56 rupees, with an additional 12% GST. Compared to last year, rates have been reduced by 3.50 to 7.50 rupees. This season, the use of universal cartons will be mandatory, and cartons will be provided according to growers’ demand, stated Sunny Sharma, General Manager of HPMC.
GST Reduced to 12% from 18% This Year
This year, the GST rate on cartons has been reduced from 18% to 12% following efforts by the state government.
