Himachal faces unprecedented dry spell, Sparking concerns over water and agriculture

Himachal Pradesh is experiencing its driest November in eight years, with the state receiving just 0.2 mm of rain this month—98% less than the usual 19.7 mm. This extended dry spell has left many areas facing drought-like conditions, raising serious concerns about water shortages and the effects on agriculture.

From October 1 to November 29, districts like Shimla, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kullu, Sirmour, and Solan saw no rainfall at all. The only places that recorded any rain were Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti, with only light showers. This lack of rain is a rare occurrence in Himachal, having only happened seven times in the past 70 years. The last time it happened was in 2016. In addition to the dry conditions, the lack of rainfall has delayed snowfall in the state’s higher regions, worsening the cold wave. Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti has recorded the season’s lowest temperature so far at -11.1°C, adding to the chill that has settled over the region.

The Meteorological Center in Shimla has forecasted that a Western Disturbance will bring rain and snow to higher altitudes in Chamba, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kangra, and Kinnaur from November 29 to December 3. However, the rest of the state will remain dry until December 4. Meanwhile, Mandi and Bilaspur have seen some moderate fog, and Shimla enjoyed a sunny day on Friday, but the mornings and evenings across the state continue to be bitterly cold.

This prolonged dry spell is a stark reminder of the growing unpredictability of weather patterns, leaving people increasingly worried about how climate change is affecting both water resources and farming in Himachal Pradesh. With the situation being closely monitored, many are hoping the upcoming snowfall will bring some much-needed relief to a parched and anxious state.
