Comprehensive campaign against drugs will be conducted in Shimla district
A District Level Narco Coordination Center meeting was held on Saturday, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Shimla, Anupam Kashyap. The Deputy Commissioner announced that within the next month, a detailed campaign roadmap to combat drugs in the district will be developed. Following this, all possible measures will be taken to make the district drug-free.
Deputy Commissioner Kashyap emphasized that the youth in the district are being severely affected by drugs. He stated that comprehensive steps will be taken to increase public participation in this effort. He urged residents to report individuals involved in the drug trade to the police and administration, as addiction is progressively weakening the younger generation. Specific areas where the drug trade is flourishing will be targeted.
Police Superintendent Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi reported that over 1,000 individuals have been arrested for drug-related activities in the past 15 months, with around 600 cases registered in the district, most linked to chitta. Properties of the accused have been seized in various cases. Gandhi expressed concern over the involvement of significant professionals in the chitta trade and noted the public’s reluctance to provide information to the police. He assured that informants’ identities are kept confidential and urged parents to monitor their children and seek medical treatment if necessary, while also cooperating with the police in the fight against drugs.
The meeting also covered the exchange of intelligence on drug smuggling trends, monitoring illegal cannabis cultivation, and the progress of interstate cases. There was a focus on promoting anti-drug abuse awareness in schools and colleges and assessing the equipment needed to detect drugs.
Instructions were given to develop a strategy for supervising drug relief and rehabilitation centers in the district. The meeting also discussed submitting an action report to the state-level NCORD committee, which oversees the activities of the Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF).
