Empowering Communities: Himachal govt drives inclusive growth with transformative welfare initiatives
In a significant move towards fostering social equity, the State government is making strides to uplift marginalized communities through comprehensive welfare programs. With a keen focus on Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities, these initiatives aim to create a society where every individual feels respected and empowered. A substantial budget allocation of Rs. 1,537.67 crore for general welfare programs, alongside Rs. 2,483.20 crore dedicated to SC-centric initiatives, demonstrates the government’s commitment to building a foundation of economic security and social dignity for all citizens.
A cornerstone of this effort is the expansion of social security pensions, benefiting over eight lakh residents across the state. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by widows, single women, and individuals with disabilities, the government has eased eligibility requirements, adding nearly 76,000 new beneficiaries to the social security pension scheme. This initiative has ensured that financial assistance reaches those most in need, weaving a more inclusive social fabric across the state.
The state government’s commitment to affordable housing shines through the Swarn Jayanti Aashray Yojana, which provides Rs. 1.5 lakh per household for eligible SC, ST, and OBC families. This program goes beyond housing, offering stability and a sense of belonging, as communities gain the security of a permanent home. To further empower the youth, Rs. five crore has been allocated for digital skills training, offering specialized computer courses to SC/ST/OBC young people and helping them thrive in today’s economy.
Inclusivity and social cohesion are further strengthened by an initiative under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Atrocities Prevention Act, 1989. This program provides Rs. 50,000 as an incentive for inter-caste marriages, fostering unity and respect across communities. The government has also established eleven old age homes, 22 day care centers, and seven senior citizen care centers across the state, ensuring that older adults receive the care, companionship, and daily support they need. Moreover, special allowances during festivals promote a sense of connection, making all residents feel appreciated and included in community celebrations.
Supporting children with special abilities, the government has introduced “Aseem,” an initiative providing monthly scholarships of Rs. 625 to Rs. 5,000 to specially-abled students, empowering them to pursue education and future goals. To encourage inclusivity, financial incentives between Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 50,000 are offered for marriages involving specially-abled individuals. This scheme also funds NGOs supporting people with disabilities, fostering an environment where everyone can flourish.
In Kangra district, the upcoming Adarsh Gram Sukh Ashray Parisar in Luthan will accommodate up to 400 elderly, destitute, and orphaned individuals, exemplifying the state’s compassion. Planned rehabilitation centers for specially-abled people further emphasize a comprehensive approach to welfare, ensuring dignity and respect for all.
Through these initiatives, the State government reaffirms its dedication to promoting equal opportunities and social unity, empowering marginalized communities to participate fully in the state’s growth. By igniting a journey of empowerment, the government ensures that every citizen has a voice and a place in the shared prosperity of the state.
