Torrential rains hit Himachal, yellow alert for upcoming days
Himachal Pradesh has been lashed by heavy rainfall across various regions in the past 24 hours, with Kangra, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, and Shimla being the hardest hit. In response, the weather department has issued a yellow alert, warning of continued heavy rains over the next four days. This alert particularly emphasizes severe weather conditions expected in Shimla, Kangra, and Chamba.
The meteorological department and local authorities have urged residents and visitors to stay away from rivers, streams, and water channels due to the potential for heavy rainfall. On Sunday, the skies over Shimla and other parts of the state remained overcast, with several areas experiencing afternoon showers. Shimla, in particular, saw light rain in the afternoon, and more heavy rainfall later.
The Director of the Meteorological Department, explained, “The active western disturbances are causing heavy rainfall in various parts of Himachal Pradesh. A yellow alert has been issued, and there is a significant risk of flooding in Kangra, Shimla, and Chamba. Unfavorable weather conditions are expected to persist until July 11.”
Rainfall statistics across Himachal
In the past 24 hours, Kangra district recorded the highest rainfall, with 214.6 mm in Dharamshala, 212.4 mm in Palampur, and 157.6 mm in Kangra. Other notable rainfall measurements include 70 mm in Dhaula Kuan (Sirmaur), 58.8 mm in Berthin (Bilaspur), 50.6 mm in Una, 46.4 mm in Mandi, and 31 mm in Dalhousie (Chamba). Additionally, the higher elevations of Lahaul and Spiti experienced light snowfall.
