Tarlok Singh Chauhan appointed as officiating Chief Justice of Himachal High Court

President of India Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, the senior-most Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, as officiating Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 20.04.2023.

A communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhawan said that President exercising her power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, appointed Justice Chauhan ad officiating Chief Justice as Acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court Justice Sabina is going to retire on April 19.

Justice Chauhan was born on January 9, 1964, in the Rohru Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. Justice Chauhan obtained his LLB degree from Himachal Pradesh University in 1981 and went on to practice law in the High Court of Himachal Pradesh. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court in February 2014 and was made a permanent Judge in November 2014.

During his tenure as a Judge of the High Court, Justice Chauhan has presided over several important cases, including cases related to land acquisition, environment protection, and human rights. He is known for his impartiality and his commitment to upholding the rule of law.

Earlier to this Supreme Court collegium also decided to elevate acting Justice Sabina as Chief Justice but her appointment was not notified by the President of India.
