Shimla sets strict timings for firecracker during Diwali

Shimla’s Deputy Commissioner, Anupam Kashyap, has issued new guidelines limiting firecracker use during the Diwali festival to between 8 PM and 10 PM, with only eco-friendly green crackers allowed.

In towns and cities with moderate or lower air quality levels, only green crackers are permitted for sale. Additionally, the use of firecrackers on festivals like Diwali, Chhath, New Year’s Eve, and Christmas Eve will be restricted to a two-hour window. These guidelines align with a 2019 Supreme Court directive (13 SCC 523).

On Diwali, the permitted hours are strictly set from 8 PM to 10 PM. Kashyap has cautioned that violating these rules could lead to penalties under Section 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, along with legal action under other provisions, including Section 223 of BNS 2023.

The Superintendent of Police in Shimla, along with all Sub-Divisional Officers in the district, will ensure compliance with these orders.
