Severe Heat Reduces Water Levels in Himachal, Causing Shortages in Shimla
The intense heatwave in Himachal Pradesh has significantly reduced water levels in natural sources, resulting in water scarcity in the capital city of Shimla. Several areas of the city are receiving water supply only every four to five days, causing considerable inconvenience to residents. In the suburbs, people have been waiting for water for five days.
However, the Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam claims that the water supply will resume in two days. Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan has acknowledged the water problem, noting that water is being provided every three to four days. The recent extreme heat has lowered water levels in the city’s water projects.
The situation is expected to improve next year when water from the Sutlej River will be available in Shimla, significantly reducing the water crisis. Additionally, potable water is currently being used in Shimla’s public toilets, and the municipal corporation plans to lay separate pipelines for this purpose.
