Rising HIV cases in Himachal: Youth and drug addiction behind alarming trend

Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a concerning rise in HIV cases, especially among the youth, with many young people falling into drug addiction. A recent survey by the Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (HPSACS) has revealed that intravenous drug use is a significant factor in the spread of HIV in the state, with students also joining this troubling trend.

Data from HPSACS, shows that 5,870 individuals in Himachal Pradesh are currently living with HIV. Disturbingly, since 1998, 304 children have tested positive. Despite these numbers, the Health Department continues to ensure active treatment and support for those affected.

During an awareness program held at Hotel Holiday Home, it was outlined the state’s ongoing measures to combat HIV/AIDS. Organized by HPSACS, the program highlighted the link between intravenous drug use and the virus’s spread. According to a 2023-24 survey, 5 to 10 percent of youth infected with HIV contracted the virus through needle-based drug use. This survey, which included individuals aged 15 to 49, also revealed that students are among those affected.

Targeting both youth and women, the state government has intensified its outreach efforts to prevent HIV transmission. Last year alone, more than 550,000 HIV tests were conducted as part of a wide-scale prevention campaign. Under the state’s welfare scheme, HIV-positive individuals receive Rs 1,500 per month, along with free bus passes and nutritional kits to support their treatment and recovery. Additionally, strict confidentiality protocols are in place, with penalties for any violations of individuals’ privacy.

As of September this year, 425 new HIV cases have been reported, showing an increase compared to the previous year. Out of these, 376 people are already receiving treatment, with regular follow-up tests being conducted. The Health Department is committed to achieving the global goal of eliminating HIV by 2030, and its efforts to end the epidemic remain unwavering.
