Residents of Bara Gawan Ward 4 struggle with littering

The Bara Gawan Ward in the outskirts of this town is facing a growing problem of littering as the Individuals of the Pateog wards of Shimla Municipal Corporation are dumping their solid waste in the grazing pasture and private land belonging to local villagers.

A resident Radhakrishna told us that blatant disregard for the environment and disregard for property rights is causing significant distress for the landowners, who have repeatedly brought the issue to the attention of concerned authorities. Several petitions were submitted by the Gram Panchayat to the concerned authorities of Shimla MC and residents.

The affected landowners have expressed their frustration at having their land, referred to as “ghasni,” being continuously used as a personal dumping ground.

They have complained about individuals throwing waste, including household solid waste onto their property, causing damage and creating an unsanitary environment.

This situation raises concerns about the effectiveness of the Swachh Bharat Mission, a flagship initiative launched by the Modi government to promote cleanliness and sanitation across India.

The mission aims to create a clean and litter-free India, with active participation from state governments and local communities but such a flagship became mere rhetoric, said Radhakrishna.

However, the ongoing littering issue in Bara Gawan Ward 4 highlights the need for stricter enforcement mechanisms and increased public awareness about responsible waste disposal.

Shimla MC garbage management is highly criticized by residents as poor door-to-door garbage management, piling of garbage bags and unscientific treatment of waste is showing blatant disregard.
