Relief from Heatwave: Himachal Pradesh Braces for Rain and Hailstorm

Himachal Pradesh, which has been experiencing severe heat for the past several days, is set to receive relief as the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for rain and hailstorm on June 19 and 20. During these two days, intermediate and high-altitude areas may experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms. Several parts of the state have already seen rainfall today.

The onset of a Western disturbance is expected to bring respite from the heat, with the Meteorological Department forecasting rain and hailstorm for two days. The issued yellow alert predicts thunderstorms and rain in the mid and high hilly regions. Some areas have already experienced rainfall, though the capital Shimla remains sunny. Rain is expected in Shimla and other parts of the state in the coming days, which will not only provide relief from the heat but also help alleviate the water crisis. Many drinking water projects are nearing depletion due to the lack of rain, and the monsoon is anticipated to arrive late, with pre-monsoon showers still pending.

Surendra Pal, Director of the Meteorological Department, confirmed that a Western disturbance is becoming active, increasing the likelihood of rain and hailstorm over the next two days. A yellow alert has been issued, and the anticipated rain is expected to lower temperatures and provide heat relief. However, clear weather is expected to return after two days. Pre-monsoon showers may begin after June 25, with the monsoon likely arriving in the last week of June.

The ongoing heatwave has exacerbated the situation in Himachal Pradesh, causing significant water shortages. Heat wave conditions prevail across much of the state, leading to the near-drying of 1,797 drinking water sources and small projects. In response, the Jal Shakti Department has linked affected drinking water schemes with other sources to mitigate the shortage. The water crisis has also hit the capital Shimla, where residents receive water only every four days.
