Prof. Grewal a Medieval historian passes away
An eminent historian, Professor J S Grewal passed away today. He was 95. Professor Grewal was known for his work on medieval and modern India as well as history of Punjab and Sikhs. Former Press liaison officer of IIAS Ashok Sharma told UNI that professor Grewal also served as Vice Chancellor of Gurunanak Dev University, Amritsar and Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) Shimla and later it’s Chairman. He has authored more than thirty books. The Cambridge University Press UK has published international edition of his book History of Sikhs in Punjab which was acclaimed world wide. During his tenure as Director of the IIAS 1989-93 a MoU was signed between the IIAS and UGC by which the Institute had also become the Inter – University center for humanities and social sciences. This program allows the University and college teachers to come to the Institute as Associate to use the facilities for their research. A multi – disciplinary team project on Socio – religious Movements and Cultural Networks in Indian Civilization was also undertaken by a team of 30 scholars drawn from different universities in India and abroad during his tenure as Director of IIAS .
