National Symposium on “Indian Folk Theatre” Inaugurated

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, inaugurated a three-day national symposium today on the theme “Indian Folk Theatre: Bearer of the Cultural Heritage of the People.” This symposium is being organized from 12th to 14th August 2024. In the inaugural session, various esteemed speakers shared their views on the relevance of the theme.

The inaugural session was presided over by Professor Shashiprabha Kumar, Chairperson of the Governing Body, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. The symposium commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Professor R.P. Tiwari, Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study and Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Punjab, joined the session virtually. The symposium’s convener, Professor Rajendra Singh, introduced the theme.

In the inaugural session, Professor Rajendra Gautam, former Professor of the Hindi Department, University of Delhi, and recipient of the Haryana Gaurav Award from the Haryana Sahitya Akademi, shared his thoughts. Following this, Professor Kuldeep Chand Agnihotri, Vice-Chairman of the Haryana Sahitya and Sanskriti Akademi, Panchkula, highlighted the cultural heritage of folk theatre in his address. Finally, Professor Shashiprabha Kumar delivered the presidential address online, emphasizing the significance of Indian folk theatre. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Mehar Chand Negi, Secretary, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla.

Throughout the symposium, researchers, scholars, and experts will discuss the definition of Indian folk theatre, its various forms, social concerns, and its role in nation-building. Additionally, they will explore the challenges and possibilities for the creation of new folk theatre in modern times, as well as its role in addressing societal issues, women and Dalit empowerment, and more.

The objective of this symposium is to promote the heritage of Indian folk culture, revive the tradition of folk theatre, and make it more inclusive under the New Education Policy. The research papers presented by various scholars during the symposium will engage in extensive discussions on the theoretical and practical aspects of folk theatre, paving the way for new avenues for the preservation and promotion of this art form. Over 30 speakers from 17 states across the country are participating in this symposium, either online or offline.
