Milestone Achieved in Dhalli-Kaithlighat Four-Lane Project with Completion of Key Tunnel

The Dhalli-Kaithlighat four-lane construction project has hit a major milestone with the successful completion of a 708-meter-long tunnel at Shungal near Shoghi. This significant development is set to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel times in Shimla.

Overseen by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), this ambitious project involves constructing ten tunnels along a 10-kilometer stretch between Kaithlighat and Dhalli. The recently completed Shungal tunnel, which began construction in 2023, was celebrated with a breakthrough ceremony led by Officers of NHAI Officials.

NHAI officials commended the hard work of 200 laborers and 50 machines that operated around the clock to complete the tunnel. This double-lane tunnel aims to streamline traffic, cutting down on travel time and fuel consumption. The construction process emphasized environmental conservation, avoiding hillside cuts and preserving approximately 5,000 trees to maintain the natural landscape.

The four-lane expansion, spanning from Parwanoo to Kaithlighat and Dhalli, is poised to revolutionize traffic patterns between Shimla and Chandigarh. The new road will reduce the distance between Kaithlighat and Dhalli from 40 kilometers to 28.5 kilometers, significantly enhancing connectivity and travel efficiency.

The project is divided into two phases, with the remaining nine tunnels expected to be completed by December 2026. This progress underscores NHAI’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure, promising substantial benefits for both local residents and travelers.

NHAI officials expressed confidence in the project’s positive impact, highlighting that the improved road network will save time and fuel while supporting sustainable development. This initiative marks a significant step towards resolving traffic issues and fostering economic growth in the region.
