Kangra Airport Upgraded Amid Rising Passenger Traffic, Expansion Plans Underway

The Kangra airport has been officially upgraded from Grade IV to Grade III by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), reflecting the significant rise in passenger traffic. According to an AAI notification, the airport has seen consistent growth in air travel demand, prompting this classification change.

Passenger Footfall Reaches Record High

Kangra Airport recorded its highest-ever passenger count in 2024, with 2,08,275 flyers. This marks a steady increase from previous years:

  • 2023: 1,93,114 passengers
  • 2022: 1,76,015 passengers
  • 2021 (Pandemic Year): 1,36,353 passengers
  • 2020 (Covid-19 Peak): Only 93,535 passengers

Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, Kangra’s Gaggal Airport is one of Himachal Pradesh’s busiest airports. Currently, it can accommodate 70-seater planes on its 1,372-metre runway and has a terminal capacity for 100 passengers, with parking space for two turboprop aircraft like the ATR-72.

Major Expansion to Boost Connectivity

In response to increasing air traffic, the AAI has planned a major expansion, including:

  • Runway extension from 1,376 metres to 3,110 metres, allowing larger aircraft like Airbus and Boeing to operate.
  • Land acquisition completion by March 31, with over ₹500 crore already disbursed as compensation.
  • Collaboration with private firms under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model to facilitate the project.
  • Expansion spanning 1,269 acres at an altitude of 2,492 feet, ensuring better connectivity and tourism growth.

More Flights, Lower Fares & Second Shift Operations

With an increase in flight frequency, airfares are expected to decline, making travel more affordable. Additionally, from March 30, the airport will introduce second-shift operations, extending its current single-shift schedule (which operates until 2 PM). Authorities are also working on connecting more destinations, further enhancing travel options for passengers.

This upgrade and expansion signal a new era of growth for Kangra Airport, promising better connectivity, tourism opportunities, and economic development for the region.
