Inter college sports meet and youth festival begins at Parmar varsity

Aimed at the overall development of students,  the 5th Annual Inter College Sports and Games and Youth Festival  begins on the campus of  the Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF), Nauni today.

 The four-day extravaganza is seeing the participation of the four constituent colleges of the University- College of Horticulture(COH) and College of Forestry(COF) from the main campus at Nauni, and the Colleges of Horticulture and Forestry (COH&F) at Neri and Thunag.

Addressing the participants, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Parvinder Kaushal stressed on the need for every student to take part in extracurricular activities along with studies. He said that it was heartening to see the participation of students in sporting activities in the university as the pandemic had restricted the students to their houses. 

 Dr. Kaushal said, “Sports and other extra-curricular activities are an integral part of the university curriculum and help in building the overall personality development of students which is necessary for success in life. Sports play an important role in inculcating discipline and improving endurance along with ensuring social interaction,” said Dr. Kaushal.

He also stressed on the need to stay away from drugs and focus on proper nutrition for the development of the mind and body. Dr. Kaushal said that it was great to see the students of the University’s newest constituent college- College of Horticulture and Forestry, Thunag participating in the event. He assured students that the university will look to further enhance the sporting infrastructure of the university and the constituent college so that a holistic learning environment can be provided to them. Earlier in his address, Dr. JK Dubey, Students’ Welfare Officer urged the students to uphold the sportsman spirit in all competitions. All the statutory officers, Heads of departments, faculty staff and students cheered the participants during the competitions.

 During the next three days, the students will be participating in both track and field events. In track events, boys and girls from the three colleges will participate in 100, 200, 400 and 800, 1500 meters races and team events like 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meters relay. Shot Put, Javelin, Discus throw, long jump, high jump and triple jump will make the field events. In addition, teams will also compete in Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Kabaddi, Badminton and Table tennis. Competitions in the Youth Festival will also be held in Music, Dance, Literary, Theatre and Fine Arts. 

 The sports meet got underway with 1500 meters race. In the Men’s category Robin Singh of  college of horticulture  Neri stood first while Ajay and Shiva of COH, Nauni stood second and third respectively. In the womens’ category- COF Nauni’s Kamini stood first while COH&F Neri’s Akansha Kaundal and Mahima from COH&Forestry Thunag stood at second and third positions respectively.
