In a bold move against drunk driving by Himachal Police, 685 driving licenses cancelled
In a determined effort to make roads safer, the Himachal Pradesh Police have taken a strong stance against drunk driving, recommending the cancellation of 685 driving licenses. This initiative, which ran from September 24 to October 8, combined strict enforcement with public awareness campaigns across the state.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic, Tourist, and Railway Police, Gurdev Chand Sharma, shared that during this period, a staggering 84,785 vehicles were checked for drunk driving. This led to the issuance of 1848 challans, a significant increase from the usual 390 issued fortnightly. Additionally, 478 individuals were arrested for drunk driving, a sharp rise from the 51 arrests in previous campaigns.
Under the leadership of Director General of Police (DGP) Dr. Atul Verma, IPS, the campaign aimed to reduce drunk driving incidents and foster a culture of responsible driving. The initiative not only imposed stricter penalties but also highlighted the importance of road safety through public education.
The recommendation to cancel 685 licenses marks a substantial increase from the average of 106 suspensions before the campaign. Authorities are hopeful that these stringent measures will deter drunk driving and ensure safer roads for both residents and tourists in Himachal Pradesh.
The police are committed to continuing their efforts to enhance road safety, with plans for similar enforcement drives in the future.
