IIT Mandi Introduces First-of-its-Kind M.S. & PhD programs in Music and Musopathy
Leveraging the synergies between music, health, and technology can facilitate remarkable advances in both individual and collective well-being. Recognizing this potential, the Indian Institute of Technology Mandiβs Centre for Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Application (IKSHMA) is launching the first-of-its-kind M.S. (by research) and PhD programs in Music and Musopathy.

This initiative underscores our commitment to promoting interdisciplinary learning and contributing to the highly regarded field of Indian music and the burgeoning field of Musopathy. The program is open to both full-time and part-time candidates and can be pursued live, online, or in a hybrid format by all qualifying candidates, regardless of geographical location.
Speaking about the new program, Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, Director, IIT Mandi, said, “IIT Mandi is committed to developing science and technology relevant to the Indian knowledge system. The M.S. and PhD programs in Music and Musopathy are research-based, aimed at producing highly skilled professionals and researchers who can contribute meaningfully to the development and understanding of music and its beneficial impacts on individuals and society, including the wellness-centric field of Musopathy.
These programs offer a comprehensive education in Music and Musopathy, covering foundational, intermediate, and advanced aspects, all enriched by the expertise of the IKSMHA Centre.
Celebrity Advisors: Celebrity Advisors: Icons of music, dance, and science have come together in this first of its kind program. Padma Vibhushan Awardee Dr Sonal Mansingh, percussion maestro Prof Trichy Sankaran, Professor Emeritus, York University, Canada, and the preeminent scientist Dr Gautam Desiraju, Prof Emeritus, IISc Bangalore need no introduction whatsoever nor does Mr. Chitravina N Ravikiran who has helped design parts of the program in collaboration with the premier music education portal, www.acharyanet.com.

About IKSMHA Center:
The IKSMHA Centre at IIT Mandi, established in 2022 under the guidance of honourable Director Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, focuses on scientific research and education exploring the interconnectedness of body, mind, and consciousness, which is deeply rooted in the Indian Knowledge System, and which has several benefits for the human body, mental health, and wellbeing. The research and teaching under the Centre include IKS areas such as consciousness studies, yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine research, Indian performing arts etc. The Centre’s research is grounded in the interdisciplinary scientific methods and it would involve several methodologies from cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, AI / ML, physics, chemistry, biology, and experiment design, among others.
