HRTC Union Demands Judicial Probe into Driver’s Tragic Death
The Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) Driver and Conductor Union has voiced strong objections to the ongoing inquiry into the alleged suicide of HRTC driver Sanjay Kumar. The union has demanded the removal of the current inquiry officer, citing bias, and has called for a judicial or independent retired officer to lead the investigation.
Speaking at a press conference in Shimla, Union President Mans Singh accused Divisional Manager (DM) Mandi, Vinod Kumar Thakur, of shielding senior officials, particularly the Regional Manager of Dharampur Depot. The deceased driver had accused the Regional Manager of misconduct in a viral video before his death, raising serious questions about workplace harassment.
The union criticized the preliminary report submitted by DM Mandi on January 14, claiming it lacked objectivity and failed to address critical aspects of the case. Mans Singh alleged that the inquiry appeared compromised and called for transparency to ensure justice for Sanjay Kumar and his family.
According to the preliminary report, the driver had a history of disciplinary action, including suspension following a bus accident in Rampur. The report stated that he was reinstated at Dharampur Depot in June 2024 and fined a minimal amount after a departmental inquiry. It also mentioned that Kumar had taken leave recently due to domestic issues and had not directly communicated with the Regional Manager before leaving his post.
Addressing allegations of delayed salaries raised in the viral video, the report claimed that Sanjay Kumar’s salary had been disbursed on time. However, the union remains dissatisfied, alleging that the investigation appears designed to absolve senior officials of any accountability.
The union expressed concerns over attempts to influence the inquiry and reiterated the demand for a judicial probe to uncover the truth. They emphasized the need for systemic reforms within HRTC to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the HRTC workforce, sparking calls for greater accountability and support for employees. While the HRTC management has pledged a comprehensive investigation, employees and unions continue to press for an independent and transparent inquiry, ensuring justice for Sanjay Kumar and his grieving family.
