HPU students join forces with HGVS to combat the growing threat of drug abuse

In response to the escalating drug problem in Himachal Pradesh, students from Himachal Pradesh University have teamed up with the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti (HGVS) to launch a campaign against substance abuse. HGVS is a non-governmental organization that is part of the Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS) and the All India People’s Science Network (AIPSN). Its primary aim is to promote scientific thinking, build a rational society, and fight against social evils.

Currently, HGVS is running a campaign to combat drug abuse and substance misuse. As part of this effort, they are organizing consultation meetings with students, youth, medical experts, civil society, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, and government bodies, including the police.

Recently, HGVS conducted a workshop in collaboration with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Solan, and the NGO “Goonj.” Six students from various departments of Himachal Pradesh University, including Aanchal, Ayushi, Atul Kumar, Divya Jyoti, and Kamal Kishore, participated in this workshop. These students gained an in-depth understanding of the complexities surrounding the demand and supply of drugs.

The group organized a general assembly for university students, attended by around 55 students. During the meeting, they presented the key takeaways from the workshop and engaged in a thorough discussion.

Today, the students held discussions in smaller groups on various aspects of the issue and eventually formed a temporary committee of HGVS at the university campus level. Aanchal and Kamal Kishore were elected as the coordinator and co-coordinator of the university campus unit.

In a joint statement, Aanchal and Kamal Kishore said, “Students play a crucial role in eradicating the menace of drug abuse, which is destroying our younger generation. Despite being a young nation, drug addiction is becoming a significant challenge. Therefore, the role of students and youth in strengthening this campaign is extremely important. While the government’s efforts are commendable, the collaboration of students, youth, civil society, and non-governmental organizations is essential.”

They added that the HGVS student unit is prepared to intensify this fight. A large conference will be organized soon, during which a permanent committee will be formed to carry out regular activities.
