Horticulture Secretary C. Paularasu Visits Shiva Project Cluster in Dheluhar
Encourages Farmers to Expand Horticulture Practices
Secretary of the Horticulture Department, C. Paularasu, visited the Shiva Project cluster in Dheluhar under the Chauntada Development section. His visit focused on understanding the progress of horticulture initiatives and addressing the needs of local farmers.
Bhajan Lal, head of the Water Consumer Association, provided a comprehensive overview of the activities being undertaken in the cluster. He shared that in 2024, approximately 7,000 plants, including varieties like Hisar White and Fine, were planted across a 7-hectare area. This initiative has benefited 19 families in the region, boosting horticultural productivity.
Addressing Farmers’ Needs
During the visit, farmers requested support for installing drip irrigation systems in the cluster to enhance water efficiency. Responding to their concerns, Secretary Paularasu instructed department officials to expedite the process, ensuring timely implementation.
He also toured the tissue culture unit established under the World Bank-sponsored Horticulture Development Project in the region. While interacting with the farmers, the Secretary encouraged them to diversify their crops by exploring other fruit varieties such as bananas and blueberries alongside apples.
Promoting Innovation in Horticulture
Secretary Paularasu’s visit highlighted the government’s commitment to modernizing horticulture practices and supporting local farmers. The cluster, a significant part of the Shiva Project, exemplifies how targeted initiatives can transform agricultural landscapes and benefit rural families.

Accompanying the Secretary were Sanjeev Guleria, Chairman of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee; Vidya Prakash, Joint Director of Horticulture for the Mandi Central Region; and other officers from the department. Their presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing horticulture development in the region.
The visit not only addressed immediate concerns but also inspired farmers to adopt innovative practices, paving the way for a more sustainable and profitable future in horticulture.
