Himachal to Scrap 15-Year-Old Vehicles, 12 Centers to Open Statewide

In a bid to modernize its vehicle fleet and reduce environmental impact, the Himachal Pradesh government, in collaboration with the transport department, is set to launch a comprehensive vehicle scrapping initiative. This program will see the establishment of 12 scrap centers across all districts of the state, starting potentially in October.

Comprehensive scrapping policy

Under this new policy, vehicles that have been in use for 15 years or more will be scrapped. Importantly, no spare parts from these scrapped vehicles will be reused, ensuring that old, potentially unsafe vehicle components are permanently removed from circulation. Each scrapped vehicle will have a complete record maintained to ensure transparency and traceability.

Government’s rationale behind the initiative

The government’s initiative is driven by the need to address the growing issue of old vehicles being sold off and subsequently becoming environmental hazards. Mechanics often repurpose parts from these vehicles, which thwarts efforts to completely phase out outdated and less environmentally friendly automobiles. By prohibiting the reuse of spare parts under the new scrap policy, the government aims to ensure that these vehicles are fully and responsibly disposed of.

Financial benefits for vehicle owners

The scrap policy also offers financial incentives to vehicle owners. Those who scrap non-commercial vehicles will receive a 25% discount on the registration of a new vehicle. For commercial vehicles, this discount can rise to 50%, making it economically beneficial for owners to participate in the scrapping program.

Official Statements and Progress

Transport officials emphasized that this initiative is part of a nationwide effort to scrap vehicles older than 15 years. In Himachal Pradesh, the registration of such old vehicles is already being canceled. The process for setting up vehicle scrap centers is underway, with the tender process in progress and work allocation expected to be completed soon.

This initiative by the Himachal Pradesh government marks a significant step towards modernizing the state’s vehicle fleet, enhancing road safety, and reducing environmental pollution, ensuring a safer and cleaner future for all. Further details about the policy are awaited .
