Himachal to recruit 400 nurses to boost healthcare at IGMC and Chamiana hospitals
In a major step to alleviate the strain on healthcare services, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced the recruitment of 400 staff nurses for the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and the Atal Super Specialty Institute of Medical Sciences in Chamiana. This decision is expected to bring much-needed relief to both overworked nurses and patients facing the impact of the ongoing staffing shortage.
Dr. Sita Thakur, Principal of IGMC, shared that the recruitment process will commence shortly, overseen by the Himachal Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (HPSEDC). She highlighted that the influx of new nurses would significantly enhance patient care at both IGMC and Chamiana, which have been struggling due to an insufficient number of nursing personnel.
At IGMC, where more than 900 patients are admitted daily across departments like Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, and Cardiology, the shortage of over 300 nurses has made it difficult to deliver adequate care. “Our nurses are overburdened, which affects the quality of care we can provide. The hiring of these 400 nurses will help ease the workload and improve patient care,” Dr. Thakur stated.
The Atal Super Specialty Institute, which is still operating several departments from the IGMC campus, has also been facing similar challenges due to the limited staffing. The additional nurses are expected to help reduce the pressure on both facilities, leading to improved healthcare services.
This recruitment drive is seen as a critical move to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure. Not only will it fill the current staffing gaps, but it will also improve working conditions for healthcare staff, ensuring better treatment for patients in Himachal Pradesh.
A girls nursing training College near AIIMS Bilaspur or any other town with a major hospital must be built and courses started so that steady availability of nurses and technicians are there for expanded services in hospitals of the state and replacements of retiring staff managed regularly without short falls . Instead of double the no of babus in govt offices , their no’s must be reduced and no’s of nurses and teachers increased proportionately .
