Himachal  to Open School Reading Rooms for Public to Promote Reading Culture

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced plans to establish reading rooms in 544 government schools across the state, making them accessible to the general public. This effort is part of the Padho Himachal campaign, a key initiative announced in the 2024-25 budget by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, aimed at fostering a love for reading in both rural and urban communities.

The Directorate of Higher Education has instructed District Deputy Directors to prioritize schools with existing reading room infrastructure for the scheme. Each of the 68 assembly constituencies will have eight selected schools offering these facilities. The reading rooms are designed to cater to diverse groups, providing a quiet space for youth preparing for competitive exams and a haven for the elderly to enjoy newspapers and books.

The initiative emphasizes involving the wider community alongside students to build a culture of reading and lifelong learning. To ensure its success, a dedicated committee will oversee the implementation of the scheme and encourage active public participation. Principals of selected schools have been tasked with making the necessary arrangements to accommodate students, villagers, and youth, ensuring that the facilities meet the varied needs of their communities.

Education Department officials have highlighted the role these reading rooms will play in empowering local youth, supporting educational aspirations, and fostering community engagement. By opening up school resources to the public, the campaign aims to bridge the gap between education and community development, creating a shared space for growth and learning.

This initiative reflects the Himachal Pradesh government’s commitment to strengthening education and community ties, paving the way for a more informed and literate society.
