Himachal Pradesh University gears up for NEP 2020: Four-Year undergraduate degrees set to begin
Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is on the cusp of a major educational transformation as the state readies itself to fully implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Starting in the 2025-26 academic session, the traditional three-year undergraduate programs across state colleges will expand to a four-year format. This change aims to bring Himachal’s higher education system in line with national standards and offer students greater flexibility and depth in their studies.
To guide this transition, a dedicated 12-member committee has been formed under the leadership of Prof. BK Shivram, Dean of Studies at HPU. This team comprises university officials, college principals, representatives from the Government College Professors Association, and senior professors. The committee, formed after an October 11 meeting led by the Education Secretary, has been tasked with creating an action plan to seamlessly implement the new program. Director of Higher Education, Prof. Amarjeet Sharma, formally announced the committee’s formation on October 22.
The committee has already started laying the groundwork, with their first meeting led by Prof. Shivram focused on assessing preparations made last academic session and addressing challenges faced by educators and college administrators in adopting the new policy. Key committee members include Prof. Mamta Mokta, Dean of Student Welfare, Prof. Shyam Lal Kaushal, Controller of Examinations, and Dr. Banita Saklani, President of the Government College Professors Association. As the transition progresses, additional members from colleges across the state may join to ensure broad representation and expertise.
Considerable progress has already been made in developing the four-year curriculum, with over 90% of the first-year syllabus now completed. Next steps will focus on finalizing examination methods and ensuring colleges have the required resources, infrastructure, and teaching staff to support the extended degree programs. College principals and the education department are working closely to address logistical challenges, such as expanding facilities and securing additional faculty.
The NEP 2020 promises a range of benefits for students, offering a more versatile, multidisciplinary learning experience. The four-year degree structure also includes flexible exit options, allowing students to earn a certificate after one year, a diploma after two years, and a bachelor’s degree after three years, with the opportunity to complete a fourth, research-focused year.
HPU’s active role in leading this transition reflects its commitment to elevating the quality of education in Himachal Pradesh. With the Education Department’s support, the government is confident in rolling out the new undergraduate program in 2025-26, marking a significant step in modernizing higher education and equipping students with skills that meet global standards.
