Himachal Pradesh Revives Petition Committee After 28 Years to Address Public Grievances

In a historic move, the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha has reconstituted the Petition Committee after nearly three decades, with Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania taking the helm as its Chairman. This significant step aims to provide a more accessible platform for resolving public grievances, sparing citizens the time, expense, and effort of court proceedings.

The newly formed committee comprises representatives from both the ruling and opposition parties, including Una MLA Satpal Singh Satti, Pachhad MLA Reena Kashyap, Dharampur MLA Chandrashekhar, and Lahaul-Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana. Vidhan Sabha Secretary Yashpal Sharma has been appointed as the Committee Officer to oversee its functioning.

Speaking about the initiative, Speaker Pathania said, “This committee will bring immense relief to the common people who often struggle to have their public interest matters resolved. Instead of turning to courts, they can now rely on the Petition Committee for swift and affordable justice.”

The committee is designed to streamline the resolution of administrative issues and ensure that grievances are addressed promptly. Pathania highlighted that the initiative would particularly benefit those who lack the resources to navigate the legal system. “Too often, the poor are left running from pillar to post for justice. This committee provides a straightforward and effective solution to their problems,” he added.

This marks the first time such a committee has been established since the sixth and seventh Vidhan Sabhas, signaling a renewed commitment to legislative accountability and inclusivity. The move has been widely praised for its potential to make governance more responsive to the needs of ordinary citizens, ensuring that justice is not only timely but also accessible to all.
