Himachal plans major stipend hike for doctors to tackle medical staff shortage
In a bid to address the acute shortage of medical professionals, the Himachal Pradesh government is planning a substantial increase in the stipend for Senior Residents (SR), Specialists, and Super Specialists. The proposed hike, ranging from 50% to 170%, is expected to be discussed in the upcoming cabinet meeting.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has instructed officials to prepare a detailed proposal for the revision. Under the current structure, super specialist doctors earn a monthly stipend of ₹60,000 to ₹65,000. If the proposal is approved, their stipend will rise significantly to ₹1.75 lakh. Similarly, senior resident doctors and tutor specialists, who currently receive the same amount, are expected to see their pay increase to ₹1 lakh per month.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, CM Sukhu remarked that the current low stipends have discouraged doctors from taking up these crucial positions, adversely affecting the state’s healthcare services. “This revision aims to fill critical vacancies and enhance healthcare delivery across Himachal Pradesh,” he stated.
The government’s focus on improving the health sector is particularly significant, given the state’s concerning cancer statistics. Himachal Pradesh ranks second in the country for its cancer burden, following the North East. CM Sukhu attributed these challenges to the mismanagement of the previous administration, adding, “We inherited a poorly managed health system. Strengthening healthcare infrastructure has been a top priority from day one.”
The proposed stipend hike is expected to attract more qualified specialists to the state, ensuring better healthcare services for the people of Himachal Pradesh. This move not only addresses staffing issues but also represents a significant step toward improving the overall quality of healthcare in the region.
