Himachal on Alert as Monkeypox Cases Rise: Here’s What You Need to Know

In light of the rising monkeypox cases across the country, the Himachal Pradesh government has issued an alert and stepped up its preparedness. The state government has instructed medical colleges and district hospitals to gear up with necessary facilities to tackle any potential outbreak.

What is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral infection with symptoms quite similar to smallpox. First identified in monkeys during research back in 1958, it was named after its initial hosts. Now, with cases spreading globally, it has become a significant public health concern. Travelers coming to Himachal from abroad are being closely monitored to prevent the virus from entering the state. Common symptoms include fever, headache, and body aches.

Government Steps Up Precautions

Health Secretary M. Sudha has directed all medical officers, staff nurses, CHOs, and healthcare workers to hold meetings and assess the readiness in their districts. The government has also ordered that medical colleges and district hospitals prepare isolation wards with at least 5 to 6 beds, anticipating a need for quarantining potential cases.

Recognizing the Symptoms and Staying Safe

Doctors warn that monkeypox is a highly contagious disease that spreads through close contact. It can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, close proximity to an infected person, or even during sexual activity. The virus enters the body through the eyes, mouth, nose, or ears. Contact with infected animals, such as rodents, monkeys, or squirrels, can also spread the virus.

Watch out for symptoms like severe headaches, swelling, muscle, and back pain. A sudden high fever often leads to rashes that start on the face and gradually spread across the body, causing itching and discomfort.

How to Protect Yourself

Prevention is crucial. Start by recognizing the symptoms and maintaining a safe distance from anyone who might be infected. Isolating the infected person is key to preventing the spread. Good hygiene practices, like frequent hand washing, are essential. Avoid close physical contact, especially with those showing symptoms, and consult a doctor if you suspect any infection. Getting vaccinated is another important step in safeguarding your health.

As the state braces for any possible cases, staying informed and taking these preventive measures can help protect you and your loved ones from the virus.
