Himachal Kisan Sabha rejected the claim of reduction in number of monkeys due to sterilization
Himachal Kisan Sabha has completely rejected the claim of the Wildlife Department in which it has claimed that the number of monkeys has decreased due to sterilization. Himachal Kisan Sabha’s state president Dr. Kuldeep Singh Tanwar said that scientifically, to reduce the number of any wild animal, it is necessary to sterilize at least 80 percent of their total number at a particular time. Whereas the figures of the Forest Department show that only 2 to 4 percent sterilization has been done every year. Which is unlikely to have any effect. In many villages, many farmers, suffering from the terror of monkeys, have killed monkeys by poisoning them. In Shimla, where the department has put special emphasis on reducing the number of monkeys, there is no effect of this. Dr. Tanwar said that there should be a survey of the claim of reduction in the number of monkeys in the state and it should be investigated by an independent agency.
Dr. Tanwar said that if there are more animals than the capacity in a particular area, then the only solution is scientific killing. But in Himachal, the forest department did not take any steps to kill monkeys despite declaring them vermin. During that time also, Himachal Kisan Sabha had suggested to the government and the department that monkeys should be killed under the supervision of the forest department and experts by forming teams of trained shooters.
Kisan Sabha State Committee member Jaishiv Thakur said that if wild animals are entering human settlements, then it is not right to blame the public for this. The afforestation policy of the department is responsible for this. Due to planting of non-fruit bearing plants, wild animals dependent on wild food are forced to move towards the settlements in search of food.
