Himachal freezes as winter tightens its grip

The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh have been transformed into a winter wonderland as an intense cold wave sweeps through the region. Keylong, Kaza, and Tabo in the Spiti Valley have recorded their coldest nights of the season, with temperatures plummeting to a bone-chilling -9.4°C. Even at lower altitudes, glacial lakes and fountains in Chamba, Kangra, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur are beginning to ice over, creating breathtaking icy vistas.

Fog Blankets the Plains

While the mountains freeze, the plains face a different challenge. Dense fog has engulfed areas like Bilaspur and Sundernagar, significantly reducing visibility and causing disruptions. A yellow alert has been issued for these regions, warning of foggy mornings and evenings until November 21, adding to the discomfort of winter mornings.

Farmers Concerned Over Dry Spell

Despite the frigid nights and foggy mornings, Himachal Pradesh is enjoying relatively mild and pleasant daytime temperatures. However, the prolonged dry spell has left farmers anxious. The absence of timely rain and snowfall is delaying the sowing of Rabi crops, creating uncertainty about the agricultural season ahead.

Relief on the Horizon

There’s hope for some respite as the Meteorological Department forecasts light rain and snowfall in parts of Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu between November 22-24. A more widespread spell of precipitation is expected in the middle and higher reaches from November 23-25, bringing much-needed moisture to the region. Temperatures are also predicted to dip by 2-3°C over the next few days before stabilizing.

Himachal’s Unique Winter Charm

Himachal Pradesh’s diverse landscape continues to display its unique climatic contrasts. From the icy serenity of its snowbound peaks to the fog-laden plains, the state offers a dynamic interplay of weather patterns, captivating residents and visitors alike. As the cold intensifies, Himachal Pradesh prepares to embrace the full embrace of winter while eagerly awaiting the season’s first significant snowfall.
