Himachal freezes after fresh snowfall: Yellow alert issued for cold wave
Fresh snowfall in the higher altitudes of Himachal Pradesh has intensified the cold wave across the state. While the weather cleared on Tuesday, minimum temperatures dropped below freezing in 15 locations, with four other areas touching zero degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Center in Shimla has forecast light snowfall in the mountains on December 12, while most of the state is expected to enjoy clear skies until December 16.
Dense Fog and Cold Wave Warning
Dense fog is expected in the Bhakra Dam reservoir area of Bilaspur and parts of Mandi’s Balh Valley from December 10 to 12. A yellow alert has been issued for cold wave conditions in the lower hills and plains during this period.
Significant Drop in Temperatures
Over the past 24 hours, maximum and minimum temperatures have fallen significantly below normal. Most areas reported minimum temperatures 4–5 degrees Celsius lower than average, with some regions experiencing even sharper drops. Maximum temperatures also decreased by 3–4 degrees Celsius in several parts of the state.

- Kukumseri: -8.1°C
- Tabo: -12.7°C
- Dharamshala: 3.9°C
- Una: 0.4°C
- Solan: -0.6°C
- Manali: -2.8°C
Maximum temperatures stood at:
- Shimla: 10.4°C
- Una (highest): 21.0°C
- Dharamshala: 16.0°C
- Solan: 16.5°C
- Mandi: 18.6°C
Snowfall Disrupts Travel
Heavy snowfall in areas like Khidki and Kharapathar has disrupted transportation in parts of Shimla district. Snow-laden and slippery roads have impacted bus services to Chaupal, and navigating the Kharapathar route remains challenging. Authorities have advised caution while traveling on snow-covered roads.
Advisory for Residents and Travellers
The Meteorological Department has warned of dense fog in specific regions and urged travellers to plan accordingly. Light snowfall is expected in the higher altitudes on December 12, while lower regions will continue to face chilly weather. Despite clear skies in most areas, the cold wave is likely to persist.
