Himachal faces warmer, drier winter: A threat to water resources and agriculture

Himachal Pradesh is gearing up for an unusually warm and dry winter season, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting above-normal temperatures across most of the state from December 2024 to February 2025. This could signal fewer cold wave days, especially in the plains and lower hills, although higher-altitude regions such as Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Kangra, and Una may still experience occasional cold spells.

The real concern, however, is the expected below-normal rainfall, including reduced snowfall in the mountains. Snowmelt is a vital water source for many areas, and with less snow this winter, there could be significant water shortages come summer. Rivers and reservoirs may face dwindling levels, impacting agriculture, hydropower generation, and domestic water supply.

The combination of warmer temperatures and lower snowfall also poses risks to winter crops like apples, which depend on cold conditions. Additionally, increased evaporation from higher temperatures could worsen the water crisis. The IMD urges residents and authorities to stay informed and take proactive measures to mitigate the potential impacts of these challenging weather conditions.
