Himachal awaits relief from dry spell with light rain and snowfall

Himachal Pradesh is set to experience a welcome change in its prolonged dry weather, with light rain and snowfall likely over the next 24 hours, particularly in higher-altitude regions such as Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, Shimla, and Kangra. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to bring isolated showers and snowfall, offering much-needed respite to areas that have endured a month without precipitation.

The past day has brought mostly sunny and dry conditions, with noticeably colder nights. In Spiti Valley, Tabo recorded the lowest temperature in the state at -1.7°C. Other frigid spots included Kukumseri at 1.6°C, Keylong at 4.4°C, and Kalpa at 5°C. Even popular tourist locations felt the chill, with Manali reaching a low of 7.6°C, Solan at 10°C, and Shimla at 13°C. Despite the cold nights, daytime temperatures stayed relatively warm, with areas in the lowlands peaking at around 33-34°C.

While the dry conditions here haven’t been as severe as in other parts of North India, they’ve still contributed to worsening air quality, with rising dust and pollution levels. The ongoing festival season brings additional concerns, as increased fireworks and stubble burning for Rabi crop preparation may further affect the region’s air quality.

The expected rain and snowfall could provide temporary relief, though a more significant weather shift will be needed to fully alleviate the effects of the extended dry spell.
