HGVS concludes state executive meeting, to intensify campaign against drug abuse
The Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti concluded its state executive meeting in Mandi, attended by 35 participants from six districts. The meeting expressed strong disapproval of the murder of a female doctor in Bengal. Dr. Bhureta, the committee’s president, stated that such incidents involving women expose the hollow claims of governments regarding women’s safety. Dr. Bhureta also highlighted the seriousness of the incident at Indira Gandhi Medical College’s girls’ hostel in Shimla, where a young man entered the hostel and later died after falling. The committee has called for a high-level investigation into this matter.
Satyawan Pundeer, the committee’s secretary, shared that the committee has issued a special appeal from women to their brothers on Raksha Bandhan, urging them to refrain from substance abuse. He also mentioned that the committee will observe Dr. Narendra Dabholkar’s martyrdom day on August 20 as National Scientific Awareness Day.
The meeting also raised concerns about the decision to close schools in the state, as the committee believes that this will particularly deprive children from Dalit and poor families, especially girls, of education.
Discussions at the meeting covered topics such as the environment, climate change, and gender equality. Bheem Singh, the committee’s treasurer, urged for financial support to strengthen the organization.
The meeting also paid tribute to the committee’s late members, Sanjeev Thakur and Pankaj Sharma.
