Heavy rains cause structural damage in Shimla’s Sanjauli
In Shimla, continuous rainfall has caused the retaining wall of the S.P.M. Ground in Sanjauli’s Engineghar ward to collapse. The incident, which occurred on Friday night, has severely damaged the ground, leaving large cracks and increasing the risk of landslides. This ground, which was the only playground for local children, is now unusable due to the collapse. Additionally, small houses situated below the ground are now at risk, and the surrounding fencing has also been destroyed.
The lack of a proper drainage system in the area has been cited as a contributing factor, as rainwater from the road flows into the ground, leading to soil erosion. Engineghar councilor Ankush Verma mentioned that heavy rain over the past two days triggered a landslide, emphasizing the absence of a drainage system as a key issue.
In addition to this, other parts of the city, including areas near Navbahar and St. Bede’s College, have experienced landslides and road obstructions. Mayor Surender Chauhan has requested damage reports from the city wards, with plans to start restoration work once the rainy season ends.
