Heavy rain in Himachal : Yellow alert Issued for August 27-28
Himachal Pradesh is on alert as the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for August 27 and 28, predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. Despite the warning, the state has seen below-normal rainfall this year.
The Shimla Meteorological Office has cautioned that thunderstorms and lightning could strike various parts of the state today (Tuesday) and Wednesday. A yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued, signaling the need for vigilance. Since the monsoon began on June 27, rainfall in the state has been 25% below average, with only 439.9 mm recorded compared to the usual 584.2 mm.
Widespread Road Closures and Power Disruptions
As of Monday evening, 41 roads across Himachal Pradesh remain closed due to ongoing rainfall. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been unable to clear these roads, especially in areas where the downpours have been continuous. Mandi district is the worst affected, with 14 roads still blocked. Kangra follows with 9 closures, Shimla with 8, Kullu with 6, and Chamba, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and Una districts each have one road closed. Additionally, 211 power supply schemes have been disrupted due to the rain.
Monsoon Devastation: 254 Dead, 30 Missing
Since the monsoon’s arrival on June 27, rain-related incidents have claimed 254 lives across the state, according to the State Emergency Operations Center. Another 385 people have been injured, and 30 are still missing. The relentless rains have completely destroyed 172 houses, while 447 more have suffered partial damage. Furthermore, 57 shops and 433 cattle sheds have been damaged.
Massive Financial Losses Due to Monsoon
The monsoon has caused extensive damage across Himachal Pradesh, with total losses estimated at around ₹1,21,694 lakh. The Public Works Department has borne the brunt, with damages amounting to ₹55,249 lakh. The Jal Shakti Department has reported losses of ₹48,856 lakh, while the Electricity Department has suffered damages worth ₹98 lakh.
As heavy rains continue to loom, residents are urged to remain cautious and take necessary safety measures.
