Harnessing solar energy: A beacon of self-reliance and prosperity
Retired Principal Earns ₹4–5 Lakhs Monthly Through Solar Power Plant in Himachal
The successful use of solar energy has opened new doors for self-employment, offering a sustainable income source while supporting green energy initiatives. Himachal Pradesh, under its solar energy policy, is promoting solar power projects on barren lands, creating opportunities for affordable electricity production and economic growth. The state government, aiming to make Himachal a green energy hub, is expanding its efforts under the Green Revolution with promising results.
Retired Principal Deshraj from Tarkhankad village in Kangra’s Shahpur sub-division is a shining example of this initiative. Utilizing 50 canals of leased barren land, Deshraj has established a 1000 kW solar power plant, earning a steady income of ₹4–5 lakh per month. Inspired by his dream of uplifting rural areas, he launched the project, Solan Power Plant, in April 2024 under the state’s solar energy policy.
Transforming Barren Land into a Profitable Venture
Deshraj explains that the land, unsuitable for traditional farming due to frequent wild animal invasions, was leased at ₹3 lakh annually to establish the plant. With solar energy being a renewable and eco-friendly resource, the project requires minimal installation time and ensures long-term benefits. The plant achieves 90–95% energy production in summer and around 60% in winter, generating an annual income of ₹50–55 lakh.
The project’s initial cost is expected to be recovered in 8–10 years, after which the profits will soar for the remaining 15 years of the plant’s lifecycle. Deshraj highlights the immense potential of solar projects in promoting self-reliance, particularly for youth. His son, a B.Tech graduate, has chosen to manage the solar plant over traditional employment, following his father’s vision of self-sufficiency.
Government Support and Encouragement
Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting solar energy projects in Kangra. He assured support to individuals interested in setting up solar plants, including facilitating cooperation from departmental officials. The electricity generated from these plants is purchased by the state electricity board, ensuring financial stability for project owners.
Project Officer Ramesh Thakur further added that various government schemes are in place to boost solar energy adoption, offering an eco-friendly and sustainable path to self-employment. With such initiatives, Himachal Pradesh is making significant strides towards becoming a green energy leader while empowering its citizens economically.
The story of Deshraj and his solar venture is a testament to the transformative potential of renewable energy, paving the way for a brighter, self-reliant future in Himachal Pradesh.
