First awake craiontomy performed in IGMC
The state premier Helth Institutions Indra Gandhi Medical College Hospital Shimla performed a rare surgery on a patient setting a new milestone in the field of Health innovation.
Senior Medical Superintendent of IGMC Dr Janak Raj said that on August 25 , 2021 neurosurgery department performed 100 per cent successful ‘awake craniotomy’.
A vedio clipping was also released by Dr Janak Raj himself performing rarest kind of neurosurgery in the hospital Operation theatre at Shimla.
“A 40 yrs old patient who is suffering with a brain tumor in right side of brain posing threat to function of speaking power and forlimbs movement was removed by the doctors in hospital while patient was able to move his fingers, speak and drinking water.” Dr Janak said.
Earlier patient have to go out of state to under go or operate such type of surgery which was complicated one, he said.
Dr Janak Raj informed that during the Covid period when people are facing too much hardships the state premier Health Institutions also witnessed increase in such Health facilities.
He said that with increasing ventilator and advancement in the life support system during Covid period hospital succeeded to expand facilities like renal transplantation, Emergency Laboratory and superspecialities
He said that craniotomy is the surgical removal of part of the bone or tumor from the skull to expose the brain.
The specialized tools are also used to remove the section of bone called the bone flap. The bone flap is temporarily removed, then replaced after the brain surgery has been done, he added.
