CPI(M) cautions CM over traffic woes of Shimla

The state unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) drew the attention of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu over the increasing traffic jam problem in Shimla town.

Former Mayor Sanjay Chauhan said that traffic jams in Shimla are taking a dreadful form regularly causing immense inconvenience to the people.

He said that local people and tourists also have to face trouble for long hours.

Mr. Chauhan said that ” If this problem is not resolved in time, it would be difficult to preserve the pride and heritage of Shimla, a world-famous hill tourist destination. ”

He said that government must take steps to address the daily woes of people and also construct more tunnels to maintain traffic and movement of vehicles.

He hailed the efforts of the government to solve the problem of traffic if the only option left is to build a tunnel.  For upper Shimla, if a tunnel from Dhalli to Sainj (Theog) is constructed on priority, it would reduce the travel distance of the people going from Shimla to Rohru, Jubbal, Kotkhai, Chopal, and Theog and would reduce the time.

He said that it would not rid of hours-long traffic jams between Dhali and Kufri but it would save time and fuel.

He said that during the CPM city government to get rid of the problem of jams in Shimla city also, the proposal of two tunnels for Lakkad Bazar lift (637 meters) and Chhota Shimla (1197 meters) from the lift was passed by the then Municipal Corporation Shimla in the year 2015 and sent to the World Bank for approval.

He said that both tunnels should be constructed on priority by the government after getting Environment clearance immediately. This would provide relief from the problems of road jams in Shimla city and its adjoining areas.
