Courier Service Busts Drug Smuggling Attempt in Himachal’s Solan District
In a remarkable intervention, a courier service in Kandaghat, Solan district, thwarted an innovative drug smuggling operation involving the transportation of charas (hashish) to Kochi. The plan unraveled when the courier shop owner and a delivery boy noticed suspicious activity surrounding a parcel.
Ajay Kumar, the owner of a courier service in Rawli village, reported the matter to the police on December 4. Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Singh shared that three young men, who were regular customers at the courier shop, brought a yellow envelope sealed with black tape. One of them told delivery boy Chandra Singh that the package contained a photo frame and should be handled with care. The men paid for the shipment to Kochi via Google Pay.
However, Chandra Singh’s suspicions grew when he noticed an odd sound upon shaking the parcel. He and Ajay Kumar decided to open it, revealing a chocolate packet wrapped in black tape. Inside were two jam packets, a chocolate, and eight small transparent envelopes containing a suspicious black, bread-like substance. The strong odor confirmed their suspicion that it was charas.
The police swiftly registered a case and arrested one of the suspects, 21-year-old Eklavya Sharma from Subhash Nagar, Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir. Investigations revealed that the parcel was intended for his brother in Kochi.
SP Gaurav Singh noted that the suspect’s criminal history is under scrutiny, and efforts are ongoing to identify his accomplices and dismantle the smuggling network. The incident highlights an alarming trend of smugglers using courier services to evade law enforcement.
Authorities have urged courier companies to stay alert and report suspicious parcels to curb such illegal activities. This case serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics used in the drug trade and the need for vigilance at every level.
