Anurag Thakur elected to the IPU’s Standing Committee on UN Affairs in Geneva
Former Union Minister and Member of Parliament from Hamirpur, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, is visiting Geneva, Switzerland, from October 12 to 18 to represent India at various meetings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The IPU is a global organization of parliamentarians from different countries, primarily aimed at fostering democratic governance and building friendships, understanding, and cooperation among parliamentarians on international issues. It complements the international relations conducted at the inter-governmental level by ministers, ambassadors, and other state officials.
On October 13, the IPU’s Asia-Pacific Group (APG) held a meeting in Geneva, where discussions were held to fill the vacant seat in the IPU’s Standing Committee on UN Affairs. During this meeting, the name of former Union Minister Shri Anurag Singh Thakur was proposed by the Chairperson, and all members expressed their consent. Thus, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur was elected unopposed as a member of the IPU’s Standing Committee on UN Affairs. The APG has sent its recommendation to the IPU, which will formalize the selection in its General Assembly meeting on October 17. Fellow parliamentarians present at the meeting extended their best wishes to Shri Thakur on his election.
The IPU is a global organization of national parliaments, established 130 years ago as the world’s first multilateral political organization to promote cooperation and dialogue among countries. Today, the IPU comprises 179 member parliaments and 13 associate members. It promotes democracy and helps make parliaments stronger, younger, gender-balanced, and more diverse.
