Agnihotri accuses BJP of blocking Himachal’s progress
Vows to Overcome Challenges
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri has criticized the opposition BJP for deliberately stalling the growth of Himachal Pradesh through political maneuvers and financial roadblocks. Speaking at a press conference marking two years of the state government’s tenure, Agnihotri accused the BJP of curbing crucial funds, manipulating policies, and attempting to destabilize the Congress-led government.
“The BJP has tried every strategy to destabilize us, including the failed Operation Lotus. Despite their efforts, we’ve maintained a stable government with 40 members in the House,” Agnihotri asserted.
He also pointed out internal divisions within the BJP, with factions such as the original party members and the “BJP-C” group—leaders who switched from Congress—fighting amongst themselves. This internal strife, he said, weakens their ability to present a united front as an opposition.
Agnihotri accused the BJP of not fulfilling its duty as a responsible opposition, alleging that they have used their influence in Delhi to block vital development projects. He said, “They visit Delhi regularly to ensure that funds for the state are withheld. Even disaster relief aid after the 2023 crisis was delayed, forcing us to borrow money for recovery efforts.”
He also highlighted financial issues, revealing that critical funds such as GST compensation and external-aided project funding were reduced, and a ₹5,000 crore share from the Bhakra Beas Management Board remains unpaid. Additionally, he stated that the BJP reduced the revenue deficit grant and refused to provide disaster relief, leaving the state to handle its own recovery.
Agnihotri took aim at the BJP for its hypocrisy, accusing the party of filing petitions against the appointment of Chief Parliamentary Secretaries (CPS) despite doing the same during its time in power. He also criticized the BJP-led Centre’s decision to halt the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, causing a loss of ₹2,000 crore in funds to Himachal after the OPS was reinstated in the state.
Despite these challenges, Agnihotri emphasized that the Congress government is moving forward with its promises, citing key projects like the ₹1,750 crore Shimla ropeway, the ₹3,400 crore Kangra airport expansion, and initiatives like e-buses, e-taxis, and solar power. He also pointed to the ₹1,000 crore investment in the revamped Bulk Drug Park project as a major success.
“We are not making noise, but showcasing real results on the ground,” Agnihotri stated, accusing the BJP of focusing solely on obstructing progress and spreading misinformation.
The Deputy CM also expressed his belief that the BJP’s actions are tantamount to financial sanctions against the state, a move unprecedented in Himachal’s political history. “Himachal Pradesh has never faced such targeted obstruction from any political party before,” he remarked.
On a hopeful note, Agnihotri reaffirmed the Congress government’s commitment to economic viability and fulfilling its developmental promises. “We are proud of our central leadership, which focuses on achievements rather than attacking opponents,” he concluded.
Agnihotri emphasized the government’s resolve to meet its guarantees, including OPS and the ₹1,500 per month women’s pension. “Even if the opposition puts up a thousand roadblocks, we will ensure progress continues and complete our full five-year term,” he asserted.
