ACJ Sabina to takes as 2nd woman and 28th CJ of Himachal high court

After gap of almost 30 years Himachal Pradesh High court would get 2nd woman chief Justice as Supreme court collegium issued notification of elevation of Acting Chief Justice Sabina as new and 28th Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High court on Wednesday. She would replace Chief Justice Amjad Ahtesham Sayed who demitted office of CJ January 21. Presently or earlier to this  Justice Sabina has been serving as Acting Chief Justice there.  Justice Sabina was appointed as a judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court on 12 March 2008 and is due to retire on 19 April 2023. The Collegium stated in the notification issued yesterday that in this backdrop, having regard to the seniority of Justice Sabina, it resolves to recommend that she be appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh “as she is fit and A suitable in all respects for the same”. ” ” Ms. Justice Sabina shall have a tenure of about two months before she retires as Chief Justice on 19 April 2023 , ” said the Collegium in the resolution .

Backgrounder

Born on 20.04.1961. She has served  as Joint Secretary of Bar Association of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the year 1986. Thereafter, joined as Additional District Judge on 21.01.1997. Subsequently became Sessions Judge in September, 2004 and was elevated as an Additional Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court on 12.03.2008 and Permanent Judge on 23.02.2010. Transferred to Rajasthan High Court and and assumed office of a Judge of Rajasthan High Court on 11.04.2016. She was transferred to the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, and took oath on 08.10.2021. Assumed charge of the office of Chief Justice (Acting) with effect from January 21, 2023. It is worthwhile to mention that justice Lela Seth became first woman Chief Justice of High court Himachal Pradesh in August 1991. Therefore it took thirty years to this High court to have another woman chief Justice. Late Justice Kamlesh Kumari Senior most judge of this HC and belonged to Una district of Himachal also served as ASJ.
